Recently the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) announced the opening of the early literacy Additional Instructional Time Grant and theAssessment Reimbursement Grant. It is important to note these are not competitive grants. Both are driven out of categorical funding allocated by the legislature for fiscal year 17-18 for all public schools and the MDE is tasked with the timely distribution of the funding. MAPSA and the team at MDE have worked together to ensure there are no obstacles for charter schools to access this funding.
There are two opportunities for funding available to all public schools:
- Additional Instructional Time Grant (First Round Due September 22nd!)
This categorical funding provides funding to districts for additional instruction time to pupils in grades K-3 who have been identified as needing additional supports and interventions in order to be reading at grade level by the end of grade 3. The funding levels have been set and you can easily check the allocation for your school. Once you have a plan for the funds, you can click here to complete the application by October 20, 2017. (Be sure to print a copy of your application before hitting submit!) While there will be an additional grant window opened later this Fall, it is important to note the funding available in order to consider how it impacts your overall funding strategy, specifically Title funds. It is intended to be flexible and allow for innovation. And, it can help support current ideas you are implementing.
- Assessment Reimbursement Grant (Only Round Due October 20th!)
This grant allows for reimbursement of funding used to purchase a computer-adaptive test for each pupil enrolled in the district OR the purchase of one or more diagnostic tools, screening tools, or benchmark assessments for pupils in grades K-3 that are intended to increase reading proficiency by grade four. Eligible expenses MUST be incurred prior to October 1, 2017 and the assessment must be administered to students during the 2017-18 academic year. Final allocations will be determined following the grant closing window of October 20, 2017. You should submit your entire expense but recognize that the entire purchase may not be covered.
As you are considering how these funding opportunities will work into your budget and/or completing the application, if for any reason you decide that you will not be taking the steps to receive this funding allocated for your school, please reach out immediately. It is everybody’s goal that all schools have access to this funding as it is a critical piece to achieving funding equity.
